History
Northern Illawarra Meals on Wheels Inc
.
Meals on Wheels originated in Britain during the Second World War assisting frail older people who needed help to stay in their own homes.
Northern Illawarra Meals on Wheels Inc. began its services in March 1964 and until November 1998 the organisation was entirely operational because of the valuable contributions of many volunteers. In November 1998, the Management Committee made a decision to pay their volunteer Co-ordinator of sixteen years from their accumulated funds, as they felt the workload on a volunteer Co-ordinator was too great. Government funding has since been granted in June 1999.
Northern Illawarra Meals on Wheels service covers a long coastal strip between Fairy Meadow and Clifton and is able to provide a flexible delivery service.
Clients have been the main focus of the organisation, and a variety of meal services are provided to between around 150 clients. Some 10years ago the organisation received funding to provide a social support service. This includes accompanied activities such as shopping, outings to cafes, libraries or other places of interest or alternatively in-home visits. The achievements of the service have all been made possible because of the efforts of numerous volunteer workers and staff. Northern Meals on Wheels now employs permanent part time and casual staff all fulfilling a variety of roles.
The management of the service is overseen by a management committee comprised of representative volunteers.
